What is Obesity – How to reduce and maintain a healthy weight?

Accumulation of excessive fat in our bodies leads to obesity. The body starts to store excess energy from food when we don’t utilize it. Obesity has a great impact on our physical and mental health.

To know if a person is obese or normal its BMI is calculated. BMI is the body mass index of a person, which is calculated as the weight in kilogram over the square of height in meters. 

BMI range from 25.9-29 is considered as overweight while BMI over 30 is considered as obese.

Causes of Obesity:

Several factors are included in causing obesity, some are:

  • Genetics

Genetics plays an important role in one’s obesity. Especially the fat around hips and lower body is hereditary. Some families are more vulnerable to get fat than others. Some have a naturally high metabolism and others have a slow dumb one.   

  • Lifestyle 

Lazy lifestyle, inappropriate sleep, and wake-up patterns cause obesity while an active lifestyle, proper eating habits, and balanced sleep decrease the chances of obesity.

  • No Exercise:

To burn the extra fats in our body proper physical activity or exercise is a must every day.

  • Unhealthy eating choices: 

Eating high caloric food like fizzy drinks, high sugary foods, high salty foods, processed and fatty foods will surely lead to obesity. 

Effects on Health:  

Obesity increases the chances of a person getting a number of diseases like

  • Heart diseases: 

Obese people are more likely to have heart attacks, increased heartbeat rate, and other cardiovascular diseases.

  • Diabetes: 

80% of people who are overweight or obese suffer from diabetes as obesity increases the chances to develop diabetes.

  • Cancer:

This increases the chances of developing cancer up to twice.

  • Reproductive complications
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Depression
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Back and joint pains
  • Tiredness
  • Gall bladder diseases
  • Skin disorders
  • Reduced life expectancy

How to treat obesity:

  • Eating healthy is the main thing to control obesity, food rich in fruits and vegetables, eating from all categories of food in portions is the key to good health and balanced weight.
  • Minimum 30 minutes of exercise is recommended every day to maintain a healthy weight.
  • Calorie count also helps to keep you on track.
